How long have you worked for Times-Union Media?

I celebrated my 25th anniversary with the Times-Union on July 27th.

Why did you choose Times-Union Media?

I was offered the opportunity to get back into the newspaper business as sports editor of The Florida Times-Union after leaving the Tampa Tribune in 1990 as executive sports editor to serve as the first executive director of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame when it was in Lake City. It was in 1996 that I was given another opportunity by the T-U to develop a specialty publications department. Not once have I regretted the move to the revenue-generating side of the business.

What drew you to the digital marketing industry?

It was a natural transition for our Specialty Publications staff to go from print-only stories and business spotlights to compelling sponsored content for Advertising and Marketing’s digital initiatives. Our staff has become more digital savvy, especially our creative copy writer, Jacqueline Persandi. Read some of her blog posts.

How are you set up for success at Times-Union Media?

I’m very appreciative of the support and opportunities the Times-Union has given me and my department to contribute to a multitude of initiatives, whether it’s providing a work environment conducive to producing new sections – both print and digital – or writing scripts for marketing videos. We’re doing our job when Advertising and Marketing succeed in fulfilling their respective goals.

What is your favorite social media platform, and why?

It has to be Twitter. It’s nonstop news and access. As a proud member of the UCF Class of ’75, count on seeing plenty of tweets from @JoeyDJax on the Knights. I’m learning more about maximizing social media platforms through my son, Eric, who’s Director of Social and Digital Media for the UCF Athletic Department. I type for a living; he tweets for a living. Amazing!

What do you enjoy most about working at Times-Union Media?

That’s easy: the people. I’m surrounded by colleagues who take pride in their work. They care about our readers and advertising partners. I enjoy representing Times-Union Media in the community, developing relationships that enhance our connection with the First Coast. I particularly enjoy being an advocate of the automotive market as editor the Drive section for the past 22 years.

What is one fun fact most people don’t know about you?

My only high school letter was a Music J from Andrew Jackson High in Queens, N.Y. I played the flute in the concert band.

What is your favorite inspirational quote or motto?

There are some many great ones from my all-time favorite movie character. I particularly like this one:
“Now if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!”
– Rocky Balboa
