You know those emails that seem to hit your inbox at just the right time with the right message? Those can come from your business.

On Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Times-Union Media is hosting The Power of the Inbox Lunch n’ Learn, featuring industry expert Ken Countess, to walk you step-by-step through effective email marketing.

Currently managing director of The Countess Group, a full-service marketing and communications consultancy, Countess has worked as an executive for Fortune 100 companies including Motorola, Marriott and CVS owned Caremark. During his career, he has been responsible for the creation and delivery of multiple successful marketing and sales growth strategies, strategic messaging and communications, and change management programs for worldwide markets.

Now, he’s on a mission to help you achieve success for your business through email marketing. I chatted with Countess to get a sneak peek inside the inbox before the big day!

Ken CountessWhat is: “The Power of the Inbox?”

The Power of the Inbox refers to something we all rely upon all the time — our email inbox.

There is a ton of data out there that proves time and time again the value of email to a business or nonprofit. 91 percent of us are checking our email just about every day. For that reason, it’s important to be able to leverage the power of the inbox.

What that means is, if you are trying to market your business and you know that you audience is going to be in their inbox several times a day, you want to be there. You have to be there.

So, among the things we’re going to talk about during this seminar is how do you separate yourself from the masses?

The upside to email is that it’s easy to get into the inbox. The trick is how do you get people to pay attention to your email? For example, I get over 600 emails per day. How do you get me to open your email? That’s what we’re going to go over in this seminar.

What other basics of email marketing will you cover at the event?

Among the things we’ll talk about is: What email marketing can do for one’s business, how to grow a healthy email list, how to create great content, how to create a great email that gets results in less than 15 minutes [and] I’ll talk about how to get email opened and what to do with the data once you get the results back.

We will also talk about the latest data from the Direct Marketing Association. What [the Direct Marketing Association] will tell you is email marketing’s return on investment is 44 to one. In plain English, that means that for every dollar you spend on an email marketing campaign, if you’re doing an average job, you should expect $44 back.

One of the examples I will share at the event is how one of our clients was using other ways to market their business, and their business was flat for four years running at $50,000 a year. They came to one of our workshops, they started using email marketing in 2013, and in 2016 they broke $1 million in sales using only email marketing to market their business.

Of course not every business is going to do that well, but that just gives you a sense of what the power of email can be.

We will talk about examples like that. We’ll also talk about why regular email doesn’t work. You don’t get the branding, you don’t get the feedback, you don’t get the data analytics that you do when you’re using an email service. With an email service, you can track not only how many emails get successfully delivered, but also how many people have opened your email, who opened your email [and] who clicked on your email. You get a wealth of data that enables you to make really great business decisions.

Anything else you want people to know about the upcoming event?

Come ready to learn. It will be an interactive session. I encourage people to ask questions. I want them to come away feeling they absolutely learned a lot to help them grow their business.

And, I’ll be giving a few door prizes away too!
