Target your audience. It’s one of the most effective ways to market your company, but sometimes that bull’s-eye can feel a million miles away.

One mistake advertisers make is trying to appeal to everyone. Even if you have a product or service that is universal, it’s important to focus each ad or marketing strategy on a specific audience.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to hit multiple targets at once, so you need to narrow down your audience and aim as accurately as possible.

Get personal

If you’re a local business in greater Jacksonville, that’s your first personal connection with potential customers. If you craft a message that uniquely connects with people in the area, it will help you stand out from national competitors. Support local is a movement that only seems to be growing, and Jacksonville is no exception with events like Small Business Week in April, so capitalizing on that can be a great first step.

Pick a generation

Although the term millennial can sound like a curse word when some people say it, the fact is millennials are a large portion of today’s consumers. The Greatest Generation (born 1924 or earlier), The Silent Generation (born 1925-1945), Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), Generation X (born 1965 to 1980), millennials (born 1981-2000), and even Gen Z (born 2001 and later), all have different ways of communicating. As an advertiser, you need to identify what generation you’re speaking to because that will have a huge bearing on the message, language, visual components, and even medium of advertising your message.

Find a motivator

Every decision we make is motivated by something. Maybe you got out of bed today to work to pay the bills for  your family who you love and want to provide for, or maybe you got out of bed because you love coffee—or both. The fact is you’re influenced by what motivates you, and so are your customers.

If you can tap into that influencer, you are closer to motivating people to purchase your product. See some common motivators below for ideas.

  • Solve a problem
  • Save money
  • Obtain beauty
  • Have fun
  • Satisfy hunger
